Practicum Final Report

Since this semester is my second time taking News Media Practicum I did pretty much the same things as last year. I continued working with the Southern News Network. I wrote many stories for the show and used what I learned in my news reporting class to record good information on events and sent them into the show. I also ran the camera many times at the news show which I like doing. Since I have done the camera many times I was able to teach a few freshman how to run it correctly which was very cool. Another new thing I did was writing a news article for The Southern paper. I wrote it on something that interested me and I knew the school would be very interested. I was really excited to see my article in the paper. I also ran the camera while we interviewed the women’s head basketball coach and a few players as well as collecting B-roll of their practice for the sports show.
During the news show I notice that if one person does not do their job correctly, the whole show may have to start over completely. So it is very important to know exactly how to work the equipment you are running and know when you are supposed to do something. Also, I know why Dr. Bradford always say one of the most important things in this class is showing up for something you said you would go to. Several times I was told to be somewhere and I would show up and no one would be there and it was very frustrating. So communicating correctly is definitely a key thing in this department and should not be hard for any of us to do. During class we have talked about many things from new television networks such as Sony TV to Occupy Wall Street. All the conversations we have in class give me a great insight on all of the topics. It is interesting to see what different people have to say about the topics we are discussing. I also like being able to get my point across and everyone in the class continues to carry out the conversation through my statement. I really enjoy being in this major, I have been talking to many people I know about internships and opportunity’s this department has to offer for me in the future. I am very excited to continue working and learning about broadcast!

I have tried very hard to get hours this half of the semester, being gone for several days at a time for meets and having two practices a day have made it really difficult. On several occasions I have been prepared to go to the News Show and it got cancelled. There is about a month and a half left of the season and practices are going to take up less of my time and give me more opportunities to get involved.
Sorry I don't have a lot of hours, but I promise I tried as hard as I could.

Exam Blog Report

During News Media Practicum this semester I have been able to expand what I learned in high school much further. I came into the program already knowing how to work a camera, teleprompter, and work the audio on a news show but I was doing all of these things on a much smaller set and was working with less equipment. Working with the bigger cameras and a bigger set gave me much more a professional feeling and a feel for what it would be like to work on a real news show. During the sports show I got to see how John works with people he is interviewing and how he kind of improvises on set which I know is a skill that I want to be able to have. Editing was something I knew how to do but there are a few things I learned with that as well. Like putting the packages in between the show and cutting right to them correctly. I was able to write a lot of stories for the News which helped me learn how to write a News announcement correctly. During class while we have the article discussions I learned about a lot of new technology and learned about many things in broadcast. To be honest I was never really sure who Anderson Cooper was, and now that I heard of him through this class I watch his show all of the time. I am aware of many new features of entertainment like Google TV, apple TV, and Hulu plus. I have learned about how important it is to be on time and show up to a shooting of something when needed. If someone says they will be somewhere other people depend on them and if they do not show up this causes a lot of unnecessary problems for everyone. I wish I was able to attend more of the sports show so I could really get a good idea of how John performs. Also, the podcasts are something that I really want to get involved in because it is just like being on a professional sports talk show and I enjoyed attending one of them to see how it goes. Throughout the semester I started to feel a lot more comfortable with the cameras and other things which gave me confidence and the ability to help other people who were not sure how to use some of the equipment. I am excited to learn a lot more about different things in the department so I can increase my knowledge and confidence with broadcast.

Practicum Hours 4/18/11

I blogged 2 stories but there was no show, I'm not sure if I still get hours since there was no show
But just in case, that 2 stories
So my total is: 33.5 hours

Fridays Class

Hey Dr. Bradford I gave you my class excuse form a few weeks ago and I did not realize till now that I am scheduled to do my first article presentation this Friday (April 1st) and I am leaving for my track meet at 10:30 am. If it would be possible for me to either go another day, or do both of my articles on the same day as I am scheduled to do one which is the last day of class (April 15th) that would be great. Whatever works for you I'll do.

Thanks,

David

Midterm Report

This semester as a Broadcast Major I have participated in as many shootings as I have been able to due to my busy schedule with Track. I have devoted a lot of my time to the Mocs Sports Show and Southern News. My first day shooting was with the sports show, I ran the camera. The cameras we use in the studio are so much different and bigger than what I was used to in high school. John and Justin showed me how to use it and I enjoyed being able to help out with that. Later, I sat in as they edited the show and put high lights from a basketball game into the show. With the southern news I ran the camera again as well as wrote stories for Anna to make into announcements for the news. I was used to doing the announcements because I did similar things like that in high school as well. I wrote a story about the last Convocation we had here and it gave me a good look at how news reporters take information they hear and turn it into their own announcement for the news. Something I did that was very interesting to me was I sat in on John’s podcast with Tony and Justin. I am very attracted to sports broadcasting and that is the branch that I want to work in and these guys really impressed me with how well they ran the talk show. They got to put their own opinions on what they thought about each topic and I am very eager to get involved with that as much as I can. During the podcast John had a man named Tony Esposito on the phone as a guest caller. That to me seemed very professional and it felt like I was in an actual news radio station. The topics that we have discussed in Practicum have all interested me. I am learning a lot about the broadcasting world. A lot of new things have come to my attention that I had no clue about, like Bing being accused of stealing results from Google and NBC possibly not being the network for the 2012 summer Olympics. I really enjoy listening to everyone’s different opinions in the class as well, I feel happy that it is a big group of people who all have the same interest as me but also have their own ideas about a lot of different things. Being in Practicum I have also learned about advertisement. For example, the Super Bowl commercials are basically split into 4 quarters along with the game. Each quarter costs differently, the 1st being the most expensive. The 30 second commercials cost well over a million dollars. These advertisements play such a huge role during big events and the investment that a company makes to broadcast their product is massive. So far this semester that is just a few things that I have learned in Practicum and I really am excited about being a part of it.

News Practicum Hours for week of 1/31/11

I have had practice every afternoon this week so I have been unable to get into the studio.
I submitted 2 stories to Anna for the News, I heard from a few people that every story is an hour so I felt that would be a good way to get some hours.
