Midterm Report

This semester as a Broadcast Major I have participated in as many shootings as I have been able to due to my busy schedule with Track. I have devoted a lot of my time to the Mocs Sports Show and Southern News. My first day shooting was with the sports show, I ran the camera. The cameras we use in the studio are so much different and bigger than what I was used to in high school. John and Justin showed me how to use it and I enjoyed being able to help out with that. Later, I sat in as they edited the show and put high lights from a basketball game into the show. With the southern news I ran the camera again as well as wrote stories for Anna to make into announcements for the news. I was used to doing the announcements because I did similar things like that in high school as well. I wrote a story about the last Convocation we had here and it gave me a good look at how news reporters take information they hear and turn it into their own announcement for the news. Something I did that was very interesting to me was I sat in on John’s podcast with Tony and Justin. I am very attracted to sports broadcasting and that is the branch that I want to work in and these guys really impressed me with how well they ran the talk show. They got to put their own opinions on what they thought about each topic and I am very eager to get involved with that as much as I can. During the podcast John had a man named Tony Esposito on the phone as a guest caller. That to me seemed very professional and it felt like I was in an actual news radio station. The topics that we have discussed in Practicum have all interested me. I am learning a lot about the broadcasting world. A lot of new things have come to my attention that I had no clue about, like Bing being accused of stealing results from Google and NBC possibly not being the network for the 2012 summer Olympics. I really enjoy listening to everyone’s different opinions in the class as well, I feel happy that it is a big group of people who all have the same interest as me but also have their own ideas about a lot of different things. Being in Practicum I have also learned about advertisement. For example, the Super Bowl commercials are basically split into 4 quarters along with the game. Each quarter costs differently, the 1st being the most expensive. The 30 second commercials cost well over a million dollars. These advertisements play such a huge role during big events and the investment that a company makes to broadcast their product is massive. So far this semester that is just a few things that I have learned in Practicum and I really am excited about being a part of it.

News Practicum Hours for week of 1/31/11

I have had practice every afternoon this week so I have been unable to get into the studio.
I submitted 2 stories to Anna for the News, I heard from a few people that every story is an hour so I felt that would be a good way to get some hours.
